The series revolves around a small virus emergency response team who handle unusual viral outbreaks, everything from ancient intelli-viruses to biowarfare. The first half of the series had a subtle supernatural slant but the second half was more science based. A constant undercurrent in the first half of the series was the mysterious Dawn, whose objective was the restoration of the natural balance of the Earth - by destroying mankind. The team comprises: the head of the team, Dr Daniel Cassian is a mysterious but powerful man with far-reaching influence; Dr Edward Marcase, a paranoid but brilliant doctor with strong mystic beliefs; Dr Kimberly Shiroma, who blames Marcase for the death of her fiance; and Michael Hailey, the head of security. Mid-series, both Marcase and Shiroma were written out, replaced by Dr Brian Taft, and the series wrote out the supernatural aspects.
